Website security

Home > About BAAF > Policies & procedures > Website security
How we keep your details safe.

In some areas of this website we ask you to send us data that needs to be kept securely - credit card payments for publications or BAAF membership, for example.

The pages that ask for this data should come to you through our secure server, and will have our verisign seal on them (on the right). You can check you are viewing the page through our secure server by looking in your browser's address bar - the address should start https://www.baaf.org.uk. If you are using Netscape or Internet Explorer, these browsers show a padlock icon in their status bar.

Your data is then encrypted by our secure server and sent to us at BAAF. This is done using FormMailEncoder (from www.tectite.com). FormMailEncoder uses the AES algorithm with a 128-bit key. The key is randomly generated for each message (i.e. each form submission). This key is protected using the RSA Public Key algorithm with a 2304-bit modulus. According to the team behind FormMailEncoder, it would take a huge network of the fastest computers well over 50 years to guess a message key and decrypt the message (at current estimates).

The shopping basket (used only for buying BAAF books) requires that your computer has cookies enabled. Cookies are small chunks of data that are stored on your computer that allow the website to remember information between pages.

Cookies are only used in the shopping basket - nowhere else on the BAAF site. The shopping basket cookies store your name, address, contact details and chosen items - NO financial data is stored. Cookies from the shopping basket are automatically deleted from your computer at the end of your browser session. If you are concerned about the contents of the cookies, please close all your browser windows before leaving the site. This will delete the data they hold. You can also delete all BAAF cookies by clicking the 'empty shopping basket' button on the shopping basket page. All cookies are automatically deleted when you complete your order.
